In Ayurveda, Asrigdara translates to 'excessive flow of blood.' It is primarily considered a disorder of the Rakta (blood) and Pitta dosha. Pitta Imbalance: Pitta, with its hot, sharp, and penetrating qualities, is responsible for metabolism and transformation. When aggravated, it can 'overheat' the system, leading to excessive bleeding. The Apana Vayu (a sub-dosha of Vata located in the pelvis) is also often disturbed, losing its ability to hold the tissues and blood in place. Causes (Nidana): According to Ayurvedic texts, the causes include: Dietary: Excessive intake of hot, spicy, sour, and salty foods; fermented foods; alcohol; and excessive meat. Lifestyle: Excessive physical exertion, excessive sexual activity, emotional stress, anger, and grief. Other Factors: Trauma, postpartum complications, and repeated abortions. The goal of Ayurvedic treatment is to pacify aggravated Pitta, cool the Rakta dhatu (blood tissue), stabilize Apana Vayu, and promote proper nourishment of the reproductive tissues (Artava dhatu).
