What is Seborrheic Dermatitis? Seborrheic dermatitis is a very common, chronic, and relapsing form of eczema that primarily affects oil-rich (sebaceous) areas of the body. It's not contagious, not a sign of poor hygiene, and while it can be frustrating and sometimes embarrassing, it is manageable. The most well-known form is cradle cap in infants. In adults, it's a condition that flares up periodically, often triggered by stress, weather changes, or illness. Common Symptoms Symptoms can range from mild dandruff to severe, red, scaling patches. Scalp (Dandruff): The most common presentation. Flaky skin (white or yellowish scales), itching, and redness. Face: Red, greasy-looking skin covered with flaky white or yellow scales. It commonly affects the sides of the nose, eyebrows, ears, and eyelids (blepharitis). Chest/Back: Can appear on the upper chest, in the armpits, under the breasts, and in the groin area.
